Patti Scialfa’s Health Journey: A Personal Battle
Cancer Diagnosis and Touring Challenges
Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen’s wife and a member of the E Street Band, has been fighting multiple myeloma since 2018. In the documentary Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Scialfa opened up about her ongoing battle with the illness.
The diagnosis significantly impacted her ability to tour. As she explained, the disease affects her immune system, making it crucial to be cautious about her activities. As a result, Scialfa made the difficult decision to step back from full-time touring.
Adapting to a New Normal
Scialfa shared that, while she can occasionally join Springsteen and the band on stage for a song or two, her new routine is a more limited one. She finds peace in this adjustment: “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that,” she said.
Balancing Family and Music
In a previous interview with Asbury Park Press, Scialfa explained that her decision to play only select shows during Springsteen’s 2023 tour was influenced by her desire to spend more time with her granddaughter, Lily, born in July 2022. She also focused on her solo album, taking advantage of time when Springsteen was in the studio.
“I didn’t feel as needed,” she confessed. With a talented ensemble on stage, she felt her contributions were less essential. “There’s not much room for me to add anything special,” she added.
Springsteen’s Own Health Struggles
Scialfa isn’t the only one facing health challenges. In September 2023, Bruce Springsteen had to postpone his remaining 2023 tour dates due to peptic ulcer disease. Later, in the summer of 2024, he again had to postpone a few performances, this time due to vocal issues. Fortunately, only three dates were affected.
Sending Support
As Scialfa continues her brave battle against multiple myeloma, fans worldwide offer their prayers and support.
