The Shocking Discovery
A TikToker’s recent experiment has sparked widespread debate about the longevity of fast food, especially McDonald’s. Naa Adjeley Tsofanye, a medical herbalist, made an astonishing discovery when she left a Big Mac on a plate for over a year. The result? No mould, and surprisingly, the lettuce stayed green.
The Experiment
Tsofanye began her experiment on February 2 with a Big Mac and fries. After a year and three weeks, she revisited the burger and found that it showed no signs of mould. Holding up the burger, she pointed out that the lettuce remained vibrantly green. In disbelief, she said, “I don’t think it’s normal. I really think that’s crazy.”
Further Investigation
Intrigued by the results, she decided to test a McDonald’s side salad. She placed the salad alongside the Big Mac lettuce to observe whether the freshness was due to the lettuce itself or the environment. As she examined the lettuce, she found moisture, indicating it hadn’t dried out over the year.
Public Reaction
Tsofanye shared her findings in a TikTok video, which quickly went viral. Viewers were shocked and amused, with some joking about passing down the preserved food for generations. However, others expressed concern about the quality of McDonald’s food, with one even stating they would never eat there again.
Previous Experiments
This is not Tsofanye’s first food-related experiment. She previously tested the durability of McDonald’s McPlant, a vegan option. After three months, it showed minimal decay, raising further questions about the freshness of fast food options.
McDonald’s Response
A McDonald’s spokesperson responded to the concerns, explaining that their Iceberg lettuce is freshly prepared without preservatives. Similarly, their burger patties contain 100% British and Irish beef, with only a pinch of salt and pepper added during grilling.
What It Means
Tsofanye’s experiments have ignited discussions about food preservation, the quality of fast food, and consumer awareness. As concerns about the impact of processed foods on health grow, her findings encourage us to reconsider what goes into the food we consume and how it lasts over time.
