Melania Trump Faces Harsh Criticism Over AI Speech
Stepping Out of the Spotlight
Melania Trump has kept a low profile during her husband’s second presidential term. Unlike past first ladies, she rarely appears in public and avoids traditional duties tied to the role. Still, she continues to promote her long-running Be Best initiative, a campaign focused on children’s well-being, online safety, and the dangers of opioid abuse.
A Rare Appearance on AI
Last week, Melania hosted the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education. She urged parents to guide their children responsibly as AI technology grows.
“The robots are here. Our future is no longer science fiction,” she said. “We must manage AI’s growth responsibly and treat it with watchful guidance. This is our responsibility as leaders and parents.”
Her call for careful oversight was framed as a continuation of her Be Best mission to prepare children for modern challenges.
A Journalist’s Brutal Response
Not everyone welcomed her speech. The Guardian’s U.S. columnist Arwa Mahdawi criticized both Melania and Donald Trump, arguing the event was more about image than substance.
Mahdawi mocked Melania for reading “from a script in a very analogue binder” and questioned whether she was the right person to guide children through AI’s risks. She argued the appearance was hypocritical, given the Trump administration’s moves to cut funding for Head Start and other educational programs.
“If Melania truly wants to help children,” Mahdawi wrote, “she should ask her husband to stop gutting public education instead of hosting AI taskforces.”
A Larger Debate on AI
Mahdawi ended her piece by quoting Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI,” who recently warned that AI could widen inequality, making “a few people much richer and most people poorer.” She suggested this outcome might explain why billionaires and tech executives are so eager to embrace AI alongside the first lady.
What’s Next for Be Best?
While Melania continues her Be Best initiative, her rare public appearances spark debate about her role as first lady and the true impact of her projects. Supporters view her efforts as meaningful, while critics argue they lack depth and clash with her husband’s policies.
