Couples charged $4,500 for Starbucks coffee after selecting ‘no tip’

Purchasing a cup of coffee from a coffee chain is something many people do worldwide. However, this couple realized they might have overpaid for their drinks – by a lot!

Keep reading to know more about what happened!

Jesse and Deedee O’Dell had been customers of Starbucks for 16 years when something absurd happened. The couple started their day off as they did normally, with an iced Americano and a cappuccino.

In 2023, an order that usually cost the couple about $10 ended up costing them $4,456.27 as they were charged a gratuity fee of $4,444.44 on top of their normal coffee order.

The charge on their bank card was confusing since the couple recalled selecting the ‘no tip’ option on the card machine. The couple did not even notice the issue till a few days later, when Deedee was at the mall with her four children and tried to make a purchase, in which the card was declined.

After the couple figured out where the massive charge came from, they got in touch with the district manager for Starbucks and were told there might have been an error with the network that the charge machine uses.

The couple was informed that they would receive two checks that would add up to the amount they paid accidentally in gratuity, but when the checks came, they bounced.

The couple contacted customer service about ’30 or 40 times that day’ until a representative assured them that new checks were on the way. Jesse and Deedee had been planning a trip to Thailand where Deedee is from to visit her sister who she has not seen for years. The massive gratuity they paid at Starbucks by accident has killed the vacation plan.

A spokesperson for Starbucks has since then informed media that the issue has been resolved.

They said in the statement, “This was an unfortunate situation that has since been resolved. The tip was entered by the customer in error.

“While the original refund checks had a typo and therefore did not go through, we issued new ones on January 31, which were received and cashed by the customer on Monday, February 6.”
