Legend of ‘Get Smart’ Dies at 97, Leaving a Legacy of Laughter and Television History

David Ketchum, the beloved comedian, actor, and television writer, has passed away at the age of 97 on August 10, 2025, according to Variety. Best remembered for his role as Agent 13 on Get Smart and as Spiffy on Camp Runamuck, Ketchum’s career spanned decades, leaving a lasting mark on classic television comedy. Ketchum became a familiar presence in 1960s sitcoms, appearing on I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Camp Runamuck. His role as Agent 13, the secret agent who often popped out of mailboxes, lockers, and vending machines, became an iconic part of television history.

He later reprised this role in the TV movie Get Smart Again! and the 1995 Fox revival, introducing his unique brand of physical comedy to new audiences. Born in Quincy, Illinois, Ketchum began his acting career in the early 1960s and quickly became known for his sharp comic timing and distinctive characters.

In addition to acting, he was a prolific television writer, contributing to many classic shows, including MASH, I Dream of Jeannie, The Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman, Laverne & Shirley, The Love Boat, MacGyver, and Full House. His work behind the scenes shaped much of the humor and storytelling of television in his era.

Ketchum’s family described him as leaving “a legacy of laughter, warmth, and timeless television moments.” He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louise, their two daughters, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His performances, both in front of and behind the camera, continue to entertain and inspire, ensuring his influence will be felt for generations. David Ketchum’s talent, charm, and dedication to comedy have left an indelible mark on television history, and fans will remember him fondly for years to come.
