It’s one of his major renovations that’s costing millions

President Donald Trump’s latest renovation plans for the White House have drawn attention after reports surfaced of significant upgrades, including gold-plated decorative elements and the construction of a new ballroom.

According to an announcement made by the administration on July 31, approximately $200 million (£150 million) is allocated for building the ballroom, which officials say will allow the White House to host large diplomatic functions without relying on temporary tents outside the main building.

CNN reported that recent changes also include ornate gold details in several areas, with some design elements inspired by the style of Trump’s private properties, such as Mar-a-Lago. “A lot of the finishes that he wants closely resemble his private clubs,” journalist Kevin Liptak noted, adding that certain pieces were imported for the renovations.

While the administration has framed the project as an investment in preserving and enhancing a historic landmark, the plans have prompted discussion among political commentators and members of the public. Some critics questioned the timing of the expenditure in light of other federal budget cuts, particularly to social programs.

The debate follows earlier reports from CNBC and The New York Times about proposed reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Analysts say the changes could affect more than 22 million families, representing one of the most significant program adjustments since it began in 1939.

Supporters of the renovations argue that upgrading the White House is a necessary part of maintaining a building that plays a central role in U.S. history and diplomacy. Opponents contend that such large expenditures should be weighed against other pressing national priorities.

For now, the project continues to move forward, leaving Americans divided over whether the enhancements represent an appropriate investment or a misallocation of federal resources.
