Chef Boyfriend Explains Why He Forbids Girlfriend From Using His Expensive Kitchen Gear

Dating a chef definitely has its pros and its cons. On the plus side, you have somebody who can make you amazing food all the time. But they’re also very particular about their cooking equipment. And considering how expensive that stuff usually is, it’s for good reason.

A Reddit user named OohBoy2020 used to be a professional chef and still has kitchen equipment that he’s kept over the years. But when his girlfriend moved in, she began misusing the equipment, despite him trying to teach her how to take care of it properly. After forbidding her to use his equipment, they got into a fight. Now, the user is asking AITA if he was in the wrong .

OP Shares How He Has His Equipment, As Well As Lower Quality Equipment For Guests.

At First, He Would Let His Girlfriend Use His Expensive Stuff.

OP shares that, since his girlfriend moved in over 2 years ago, she’s been constantly misusing his expensive kitchen equipment (which he calls his babies). She would, for instance, soak his cast iron pans, or run hot pans under cold water. She’d also use knives directly on countertops instead of using a cutting board. OP would try to teach and remind his girlfriend how to use his equipment properly, but she’d mostly ignore him or get annoyed.

Finally, OP came home to find a pot soaking in soapy water. He got upset and told her she can no longer use his equipment. The girlfriend got mad because she feels that he can no longer trust her.

He also came to learn that, despite being told otherwise, using soap on cast iron doesn’t damage it. Soaking cast iron for long periods can cause rusting, though.

Some mentioned that, though the cast iron issues may not be as bad as he initially thought, the other ways in which the girlfriend misused OP’s stuff (the knives especially) was pretty unfair. To many, it seemed like she did not respect his things.

One user, who is a chef, shared that her non-chef husband doesn’t use (or at least clean) her equipment because he often doesn’t know how. There shouldn’t be a problem with OP’s girlfriend using lower-quality items that she can use without worrying about damaging them.

OP also agreed with this, though he should probably wait until the argument settles a bit.
