Kathy Bates struggled to cope after being diagnosed with a lifelong illness

From Oscar Winner to Health Advocate

Kathy Bates has thrilled audiences for decades with her unforgettable performances in MiseryAmerican Horror StoryRichard Jewell, and Fried Green Tomatoes. But today, the award-winning actor is gaining recognition for a different role — as a survivor and advocate.

At 75, the Tennessee-born star continues to inspire millions as a two-time ca**er survivor and a powerful voice for those living with lymphedema, a painful and incurable condition she developed after ca**er surgery.

Battling Cancer — Twice

In 2003, just one year after shocking audiences by going nude in About Schmidt, Bates was diagnosed with ovarian ca**er. She survived that fight, only to face breast ca**er in 2012, which led to a double mastectomy.

Despite the physical and emotional toll, Bates kept working — and kept fig*ting.

“I Went Berserk”

After her breast ca**er surgery, doctors diagnosed Bates with lymphedema — a chronic condition that causes painful swelling, usually in the limbs. The disease affects the lymphatic system, often damaged during ca**er treatments.

“I went berserk,” Bates told The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I left the examining room, ran out of the building, drains still in, holding a pillow to my chest.”

She later told SurvivorNet, “I was bitter. I was depressed. I thought my career was over.”

Finding Support and Strength

Eventually, Bates met a lymphedema expert who changed her outlook. “She said, ‘That’s all in the past. Now you’re going to begin the rest of your life.’” That moment, Bates said, gave her the strength to move forward.

She now manages her condition with compression sleeves and physical therapy. But more importantly, she’s using her platform to educate others.

A Voice for 10 Million Americans

Bates serves as the national spokesperson for the Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN). “It’s estimated that 10 million people in this country suffer with it,” she said. “That’s more than ALS, muscular dystrophy, MS, Parkinson’s, and AIDS combined.”

She urges patients — especially women — to push for proper diagnoses. “Too often, doctors dismiss symptoms. If we’re overweight and say our legs are swelling, they tell us to eat a salad,” she said bluntly.

Turning Fame Into Purpose

Despite ongoing challenges, Bates hasn’t let lymphedema slow her down. Most recently, she appeared in The Miracle Club (2023).

“I didn’t want to have ca**er. I really don’t want to have lymphedema,” she admitted. “But I feel blessed. If I didn’t have it, I wouldn’t be in a position to help others.”
