During an interview in Australia, Denzel Washington discreetly shares that he’s retiring.

Denzel Washington Announces Retirement Plans

At 69, Denzel Washington has revealed that he plans to retire after completing a final set of projects, marking the end of an illustrious 40-year career. In a recent interview with Australia’s Today show, he shared his thoughts on stepping back from Hollywood, stating, “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. Probably not that many.”

Exciting Final Roles

Before retiring, Washington has several exciting projects lined up. He will revisit the iconic role of Othello, a character he first played at 22. Now, at 70, his return to the stage is a full-circle moment for both him and his fans. Washington has also teased collaborations with directors Steve McQueen and Ryan Coogler, the latter of whom is reportedly writing a role for him in the upcoming Black Panther film. Additionally, he’s expressed interest in playing King Lear, further adding to his impressive body of work. After completing these projects, Washington plans to retire.

A Storied Career

Washington’s career began in 1977 with the television film Wilma, followed by his film debut in Carbon Copy (1981). Over the years, he captivated audiences in films like Glory, Training Day, and Malcolm X, winning two Academy Awards. His Hollywood legacy has been built on playing complex characters and working with visionary directors.

Future Projects and Final Choices

Earlier this year, Washington mentioned his interest in Gladiator II but emphasized that he now only wants to take on projects that inspire him. He explained, “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker.”

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

As Washington approaches retirement, he leaves behind a legacy defined by artistry, passion, and integrity. His final roles promise to be as impactful as the many unforgettable performances throughout his career, solidifying his place among the greatest actors of his generation.
