Old Reflections on Ozzy Osbourne’s First Wife, Thelma Riley, Come to Light

A Love That Turned to Regret

Before becoming the iconic “Prince of Darkness,” Ozzy Osbourne was simply a young man in love. In 1971, he met Thelma Riley at a Birmingham nightclub. They married the same year and raised three children — Jessica, Louis, and Elliot (Thelma’s son from a previous relationship).

Though their relationship began with passion, it soon unraveled. In his 2009 memoir I Am Ozzy, the rock legend admitted, “I put that woman through hell.” He detailed a decade filled with infidelity, substance ab*se, emotional neglect — and, tragically, ab*se.

Struggles Behind Closed Doors

Ozzy confessed to being a “married bachelor,” unable to stay faithful or emotionally present. One horrifying incident, where he gave Thelma a black eye during a drunken episode, left him ashamed. He recalled her father’s disturbing silence afterward, a moment that haunted him for years.

Sobriety later forced Ozzy to confront his past. “It wasn’t until I became sober that I truly realized how disgusting my behavior was,” he wrote.

Caught Between Two Lives

As Ozzy’s marriage to Thelma crumbled, his relationship with Sharon Osbourne intensified. He juggled visits between both women, sometimes mixing up their names. Still, he hesitated to end his first marriage — not for himself, but for the kids. “The thought of losing my family was unbearable,” he admitted.

Divorce Left a Lasting Scar

Ozzy and Thelma divorced in 1982, the same year he married Sharon. Together, Ozzy and Sharon had three more children: Aimee, Kelly, and Jack.

Years later, when Jack announced his own divorce, Ozzy broke down in tears. “I’m crying for you because I know how painful it’s going to be,” he told his son, according to Sharon.

A Final Farewell

Ozzy passed away on July 22 at age 76, surrounded by his family. His final public appearance came just 17 days earlier — during a powerful Black Sabbath reunion in Birmingham.

In their statement, the Osbourne family wrote:
“He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our privacy.”

More Than a Rockstar

Though Ozzy’s career was filled with chaos and controversy, his openness about addiction, failure, and family resonated deeply with fans. He didn’t shy away from the truth — even when it was painful.

As the world remembers his music, it also remembers the man behind the legend — flawed, candid, and unforgettable.
