Paddleboarder D**s After Saving 12-Year-Old Relative in Utah

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but they could not save the paddleboarder’s life.

On July 12, 2025, 31-year-old Daniel Braga Figueiredo heroically rescued his 12-year-old family member from drifting away on Silver Lake Flat Reservoir in Utah. He borrowed a paddleboard and paddled out to reach her. After ensuring her safety, Daniel tragically disappeared beneath the water.

The Rescue and Search Efforts

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. in American Fork Canyon. According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was floating on an inflatable tube when strong currents pulled her farther into the reservoir.

Witnesses reported seeing both Daniel and the girl struggle in the water. As they fought to stay afloat, Daniel lifted her onto a flotation device before vanishing under the surface.

Emergency crews arrived quickly. First responders and search and rescue volunteers scoured the area for hours. Around 9:30 p.m., rescuers recovered Daniel’s body.

Sergeant Ormond of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences, thanking all agencies involved in the rescue.

Area Closed During Search

Officials closed the road to the reservoir to provide space for rescue teams. They urged the public to avoid the area while the search continued.

About Silver Lake Flat Reservoir

Nestled in the mountains of American Fork Canyon, Silver Lake Flat Reservoir sits adjacent to the Lone Peak Wilderness. Built in 1971, it underwent major upgrades in 2015 to improve seismic safety. The reservoir now features a strengthened dam designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and offers expanded recreational opportunities.

Another Tragic Water Accident in Alabama

In a separate tragedy, a family outing in Alabama ended in heartbreak. On June 15, 2025, 27-year-old Brittney Sherman died after a boat collision near Bayou Sara in Saraland.

Details of the Alabama Boat Collision

The crash occurred around 5:50 p.m., involving two boats several miles south of the Bayou Sara Boat Launch. Brittney, a passenger, was with her husband Cody Sherman and their four-year-old son. The boat was operated by a 19-year-old man from Lucedale.

The other boat’s driver was a 52-year-old man from Wilmer. Neither operator suffered injuries. Authorities, led by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), continue to investigate the cause.

Search and Recovery Efforts

After Brittney was reported missing, multiple agencies launched an extensive search. Teams worked through the night, including Marine and Underwater Search units from Mobile Police, Mobile Fire-Rescue, Saraland Fire-Rescue, Daphne Search and Rescue, Mobile County Sheriff’s Flotilla, and Chickasaw Fire-Rescue.

By early morning on June 16, ALEA took command of the investigation. Around 11 a.m., rescuers recovered Brittney’s body roughly 100 yards from where she went overboard.

Family Mourns and Community Supports

Brittney’s family confirmed her identity and mourned deeply. Her husband Cody shared heartfelt posts on Facebook. He promised to care for their children and expressed gratitude for community support.

In one message, he wrote, “Brittney, I love you more than anything. I promise to take care of these babies for you.” He also asked for prayers for their injured son, calling him “the toughest person I ever met.”

Ongoing Investigation and Lasting Impact

As ALEA investigates, Brittney’s family and friends remember her bright spirit and tragic loss. This incident highlights how quickly a day on the water can turn d**dly.
