Secret Princess Diana photo released 40 years later

A long-hidden photograph of Princess Diana beaming beside rock legend David Bowie at a London concert has recently come to light — and its mysterious absence for nearly 40 years is raising questions.

Why Was It Kept a Secret?

The photo, taken in 1987, was captured during a charity concert at Wembley Stadium where a 25-year-old Diana attended to see Bowie perform. Prominent concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith arranged the meeting, and renowned photographer Denis O’Regan, who had worked closely with Bowie, was called in to document the moment.

O’Regan told the Daily Mail that Diana had expressed interest in posing with Bowie and was curious if he’d be willing. Bowie readily agreed, and the picture was taken. However, the following day, Buckingham Palace asked that it not be made public.

Not About Bowie — But About Diana’s Companion

The palace’s concern wasn’t about the pop star himself or anything inappropriate in the photo. The issue centered around who Diana was with that evening: Major James Hewitt.

At the time, whispers of an affair between Diana and Hewitt were starting to emerge, and the royal household was eager to avoid stoking the rumors.

Although Hewitt stayed away from photographers and wasn’t captured in the image, his presence was known. O’Regan explained, “No one knew who he was then, so I didn’t photograph him, and their relationship wasn’t public yet.”

Still, out of respect for the palace’s request—and perhaps to avoid entanglement in royal controversies—O’Regan decided not to release the image and says he stands by that decision today.

Diana Faced Backlash for Her Wardrobe

In her own biography, Diana reflected on the criticism she received for her fashion choice that night. She had worn black leather trousers—an unconventional look by royal standards.

Her attire reportedly did not go over well with the monarchy, though Diana defended her decision, explaining she wanted to relate to the younger audience around her.

Finally Published in New Bowie Biography

Decades later, the once-suppressed photo has now been included in a new biography of David Bowie. The book features rare images and stories from Denis O’Regan, including this special moment between the Princess of Wales and the music icon.

While the picture no longer poses any threat to the royal reputation, its delayed release underscores the extent to which the royal institution worked behind the scenes to manage and protect Diana’s public image.
