A Parent’s Promise: Doing Everything for Their Child
Ask any parent, and they’ll likely say the same thing—there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for their child. From the moment we become mothers or fathers, our lives change forever. We commit ourselves to loving, protecting, and caring for the life we’ve brought into the world.
But despite our deepest efforts, some things remain out of our control.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Alina and Aaron Edwards faced the unimaginable when doctors diagnosed their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Though devastated, they held tightly to the hope that she could beat the disease.
Sadly, just a few months later, doctors delivered crushing news—there was nothing more they could do.
Making Every Moment Count
Determined to honor Emma’s final wishes, her parents decided to make the most of the time they had left. While many children in similar situations dream of Disneyland or meeting a celebrity, Emma had something else in mind.
She wanted to marry her 10-year-old boyfriend, DJ.
A Community Rallies for Emma
Word of Emma’s wish spread quickly through the community. Supporters formed a group called “Emma’s Army”, committed to making her dream come true. Volunteers, donations, and love poured in.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation soon joined the effort. Emma’s mom shared, “Most kids want to go to Disneyland, but Emma wanted to get married, be a wife, and have three kids.”
A Love Beyond Their Years
Emma and DJ had tried to “marry” once before. At just eight years old, they staged a classroom wedding with friends as bridesmaids and groomsmen. Their teacher, however, didn’t allow it—even as a pretend ceremony.
This time, though, everyone was on board. With their parents’ blessing and the community’s support, Emma and DJ would get their special day.
A Wedding to Remember
Emma’s family and friends pulled everything together in just two days. “Everything was donated. It was so precious,” said Alina.
On June 29, Emma arrived in a wheelchair, dressed in a beautiful purple gown. Her father gently pushed her down the aisle, and her eyes sparkled as she smiled at DJ waiting at the altar.
The young couple exchanged vows and rings. DJ sealed the ceremony with a kiss. Afterward, Emma returned to bed, tired but glowing from happiness.
DJ: A Young Boy with a Big Heart
DJ wasn’t just Emma’s crush—he was her steady source of strength. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Alina wrote:
“DJ has been Emma’s ‘Boo bear’ since 3rd grade. He protects her, helps her, and keeps her smiling. He has stood beside her through all her ups and downs. DJ will forever be family.”
Saying Goodbye to Emma
Just weeks later, on July 11, 2023, Emma passed away. Her obituary lovingly honored her life:
“Emma Brooks Edwards entered heaven and into the loving arms of her Great-grandma Frannie Annie… She was 10 years old and battled leukemia for 16 months. Emma was our little unicorn—creative, funny, strong, and full of love.”
Emma is remembered for her bright spirit, her love for others, and her extraordinary courage.
A Lasting Legacy
Though her time was short, Emma touched countless lives. Her story is one of love, bravery, and community—a reminder that even in the darkest moments, light and kindness can shine through.
