Melania Trump sidesteps formal protocol at a major event in the White House

Melania Trump Breaks Protocol at White House Event

On Monday, May 19, Donald and Melania Trump gathered in the Rose Garden to announce a major legislative milestone. During the event, Melania Trump broke political protocol in a highly public way.

A Landmark Bill Signed Into Law

Earlier that day, President Trump officially signed the Take It Down Act into law. The new measure penalizes online se.xu.al exploitation, particularly the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, including AI-generated “deepfakes.”

According to AP News, websites and social media platforms must now remove such content within 48 hours of a vic.tim’s request. They must also eliminate any duplicate versions.

Melania Adds Her Signature—Unprecedented Move

In a surprising move, Melania Trump signed the bill as well. Although not an elected official, she called the new law a “national victory” and emphasized its role in protecting children from AI-fueled online exploitation.

“AI and social media are the digital candy for the next generation,” she said. “Sweet, addictive, and engineered to influence their cognitive development. But unlike sugar, these tools can be we.apon.ized—and sadly, even be de.ad.ly.”

President Trump Praises Her Efforts

President Trump acknowledged the symbolic nature of her signature but encouraged it anyway.

“C’mon, sign it anyway,” he told her. “She deserves to sign it.”

He also praised her for pushing the legislation forward:

“Honey, you’ve done amazing. When I heard about this bill, I thought, ‘This sounds like a tough one,’ but you got it done. I congratulate you.”

The First Lady’s Role Was Crucial

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Melania’s essential involvement.

“First Lady Melania Trump was instrumental in getting this important legislation passed,” she said at a press conference.
“She met with members of Congress, survivors, their families, and advocates to help move the bill forward.”

A Continuation of the ‘Be Best’ Initiative

Melania’s work on this bill continues the goals of her Be Best campaign, which began during her husband’s first term. The campaign focuses on children’s well-being, responsible social media use, and opioid ab.us.e prevention.

Leavitt concluded:

“We are grateful for the First Lady’s hard work and dedication. She will continue to champion children’s wellbeing through her Be Best agenda.”
