Wild Prison Break: 10 Fugitives Escape Using Old-School Tactics And A 3-Word Clue

One of the inmates remaining at large is a convicted murderer who broke out of prison in a manner reminiscent to The Shawshank Redemption.

The 10 inmates sneaked out of the Orleans Justice Centre in New Orleans, Louisiana, yesterday, May 16, as seen on surveillance film.

Since then, three of the fugitives have been apprehended: Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis. Derrick Groves, a convicted double murderer, and Corey Boyd, 19, who has not yet been charged with second-degree murder, are still at free.

Groves, 27, was convicted of second-degree murder charges against Byron Jackson and Jamar Robinson, who were killed during the 2018 Mardi Gras celebrations.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil issued a disturbing statement about Groves at his retrial last year, in which jurors unanimously found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison.

He said, “There was no doubt in the minds of anyone involved in this case that Groves would continue his bloody rampage on the streets of New Orleans if he weren’t stopped.”

“We hope this guilty verdict and the life sentence that accompanies it will give the community renewed confidence and hope in law enforcement.”

The escape

More than seven hours passed before prison guards realised the seasoned criminals had escaped; security footage showed the escape beginning at 12.22 a.m. in the cell block.

At that moment, a number of prisoners were observed banging open a cell’s sliding door. It took them 21 minutes to succeed in doing so, during which time the lone jail guard is thought to have gone to get some dinner.

Like in the popular television show Prison Break, the inmates ripped the toilet away from the wall after entering the cell at 12.43 am. A picture of the toilet shows the crazy three-word statement the crooks put behind it.

They wrote ‘Too easy LOL’ on the wall, mocking officials, and pointed an arrow downward.

Taking to Facebook to explain how the inmates made off, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office wrote: “At 1:00 a.m., they exited the loading dock door adjacent to the pod and moved down a secure perimeter road toward the under-construction Phase III facility.”

“At 1:19 a.m., they were seen scaling a fence between the OJC and Phase III using blankets to avoid injury from the barbed wire.”

“From there, they fled across both directions of I-10 and into a nearby neighbourhood, where OPSO investigators later recovered discarded clothing believed to belong to the escapees.”
