Donald Trump believes he introduced a new word

Trump’s Bold Claims Never Slow Down

Donald Trump rarely holds back. He regularly makes bold declarations—whether about boosting the economy or flaunting his vocabulary. He always finds a way to steal the spotlight.

A New Move on Drug Prices

Recently, Trump unveiled a sweeping plan to slash prescription drug costs by up to 80%. Speaking at a White House press conference, he promised to match U.S. prices with those in Europe.

Calling it one of the most powerful executive orders in U.S. history, the 78-year-old urged pharmaceutical companies to act. “The rest of the world will pay more, and America will pay significantly less,” he stated. “It’s a smaller population compared to the rest of the world.”

Then Came the Word Claim

However, what caught most people off guard wasn’t the policy—it was Trump’s claim about a “new word.”
“We’re doing something I call equalizing,” he said. “It’s a new word I came up with, and I think it’s the best word. We’re going to equalize. Everyone’s going to pay the same.”

But… Is “Equalizing” Actually New?

Linguists and historians didn’t let that slide. They quickly pointed out that “equalize” has been around for centuries.

Tech and language commentator Farrukh Younus posted a TikTok correction. “President Trump says he coined ‘equalize,’ but the word dates back to the late 15th century,” he explained.

He even gave a quick history lesson:

  • Latin rootaequalis = equal

  • Late Latinaequalizare = to make equal

  • English usage: around 1480–1500

Even Merriam-Webster confirms “equalizing” appeared in English as early as 1559—long before Trump entered the scene.

Social Media Has a Field Day

Of course, the internet had thoughts.

One user joked, “Pretty sure I’ve heard that word before…”
Another chimed in, “Didn’t we have a TV show in the 80s called The Equalizer? Maybe Trump came up with it back then?”

Not His First ‘Invention’

This isn’t the first time Trump has claimed originality. Recently, he joked about becoming Pope and even shared an AI-generated image of himself in papal robes.

He later denied creating the image. Still, it showed up on his official social media accounts.

Final Thoughts

Will Trump ever get credit for “inventing” the word equalize? Probably not. But in politics, stranger things have happened.
