Breakout in Walking Tall

In 1973, Baker exploded onto the scene with Walking Tall. He played a bat-wielding sheriff who fought corruption with raw fists and unshakable grit.

The film’s bold marketing asked, “When was the last time you stood up and applauded a movie?”

Audiences did just that. The film became a surprise hit, earning praise and even political impact. Baker once claimed that a Thai screening sparked a student uprising:

“One hundred thousand students and farmers picked up sticks, pitchforks, and guns to overthrow the damn rip-off government.”

More Than Just One Role

After Walking Tall, Baker starred in dozens of films — Charley VarrickMitchellCape FearMars Attacks!, and Reality Bites, to name a few.

But Bond fans know him best for a rare achievement: he played both villain and ally.

Bond Villain Turned Ally

In 1987, he portrayed arms dealer Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights, becoming the first American Bond villain.

Years later, he switched sides, reappearing as CIA agent Jack Wade in GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies alongside Pierce Brosnan.

Acclaimed TV Work

Baker also shined on television. His role as CIA operative Darius Jedburgh in Edge of Darkness earned him a BAFTA nomination and international acclaim.

A Gentle Giant

Despite his tough-guy image, those who knew him described Baker as kind and thoughtful. He loved books, nature, and especially cats.

“They don’t think big guys like us are romantic or funny,” he once said. “You do the best you can because you want to be hired again.”

Final Roles and Quiet Goodbye

Baker’s last major film was Mud (2012), alongside Matthew McConaughey. The film won the Robert Altman Award. Afterward, Baker retired from acting.

He was married to Maria Dolores Rivero-Torres from 1969 to 1980. They had no children. He is survived by extended family in Groesbeck, Texas.

Cause of Death

Joe Don Baker died of lung cancer on May 7, 2025, at an assisted living facility in Los Angeles. A former brother-in-law confirmed the news to The Washington Post. The public announcement followed on May 15.

A Legacy of Strength and Subtlety

From dusty westerns to MI6 intrigue, Baker left a lasting mark. Gruff, grounded, and unforgettable — Joe Don Baker forged his path and stayed true to it.

RIP, and thanks for the memories.
