Social media reacts strongly to Pope Leo’s first tweet as the new pontiff—and it’s direct

Pope Leo XIV Joins Twitter with a Global Message of Peace

Pope Leo XIV has officially joined Twitter—and wasted no time making waves.

First Tweets Spark Global Attention

On May 14, the newly elected pope posted a series of seven tweets. Each one addressed the Catholic Church’s position on today’s global conflicts.

His opening line read:

“Peace be with you all! This is the first greeting spoken by the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd.”

He followed with a powerful wish: that this peace echoes in hearts, homes, and nations across the world.

A Bold New Voice for the Church

Many found it unusual to see a religious figure take to Twitter. Yet, when Pope Leo does it, it somehow feels right.

The Vatican announced his appointment on May 8. Formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the 69-year-old now leads the Catholic Church under the name Pope Leo XIV.

Subtle Shade Toward World Leaders?

Social media users believe the pope may have already taken a jab at former U.S. President Donald Trump. Even before assuming his new title, Pope Leo appeared to criticize Trump’s administration on Twitter.

Now, on his official papal account, he’s returned with a renewed and urgent message.

Honoring His Predecessors, Promoting the Christian East

In his tweets, Pope Leo referenced two former popes. He quoted one who emphasized the importance of preserving Eastern rites. Building on that, Pope Leo urged the world to protect and promote Eastern Christian traditions, especially those in diaspora.

“The ancient, yet ever new spiritualities of the Christian East offer a healing balm,” he wrote.

He described these spiritualities as blending human suffering with divine mercy—never leading to despair, but inviting grace.

A Firm Stand on War and Peace

Next, Pope Leo directly addressed current conflicts, from Ukraine to Sudan, Gaza, and Syria.

“Violence and war should provoke outrage,” he stated, condemning the loss of life in the name of military conquest.

He reminded the world of Christ’s words: “Peace be with you.”

Importantly, he clarified that peace isn’t “the silence of the tomb” or the product of domination. Instead, peace is “a gift” found in reconciliation, forgiveness, and courage.

The Vatican’s Role in Global Negotiations

Pope Leo made clear that the Holy See remains ready to assist in international negotiations. He stressed that peace isn’t passive—it requires action and will.

His closing tweet resonated deeply:

“War is never inevitable. Weapons can and must fall silent… Those who sow peace will endure throughout history.”

The Internet Reacts

The pope’s first Twitter thread took social media by storm. In just days, his account gained over 18.5 million followers.

Thousands commented, applauding his call for peace. As one user wrote:

“Your message of peace is important, now more than ever.”
