Pope Leo delivers quiet shade in Donald Trump’s direction

Trump Takes Credit — Then Faces Backlash

Moments after Donald Trump claimed he influenced the pope’s appointment, Pope Leo seemed to clap back. During a press conference, the new pontiff delivered a pointed message that many believe was subtle shade aimed at the former U.S. President.

Live from the Vatican

On May 11, ABC’s This Week aired a live broadcast from the Vatican. Martha Raddatz hosted a roundtable for Pope Leo XIV’s first Sunday blessing, joined by senior national correspondent Terry Moran.

“The question we had was how much did the American moment with President Trump matter? They’re telling us not at all,” Moran said. He emphasized that it was Cardinal Robert Prevost, not Trump, who played the key role.

Raddatz agreed, replying, “It was him”—referring to the Chicago-born Cardinal now known as Pope Leo XIV.

Trump Fires Back

Shortly after the broadcast, Trump lashed out on Truth Social. He first slammed ABC News and Raddatz, mocking the show as “the Slopadopolus show.”

He then claimed credit for the pope’s appointment:

“So funny to watch old timer Martha Raditz… blurt out that Pope Leo’s selection had nothing to do with Donald Trump… Remember, I did WIN the Catholic Vote, by a lot!”

He ended the post with, “It’s time for change. MAGA!!!”

Online Users React

Trump’s bold claim drew heavy criticism online.
“Deplorable,” one user posted on X.
Another added, “Is Trump claiming he helped elect the Pope? Embarrassing.”
A third wrote, “What a narcissist! Trump does realize Americans don’t vote for the Pope, right?”

Pope Leo Sends a Message

On May 12, Pope Leo addressed over 1,000 journalists in Vatican City. Though he didn’t mention Trump, many interpreted his remarks as a direct response.

“We must say ‘no’ to the war of words and images,” Leo declared. “Let us disarm communication of all prejudice and resentment… Free it from aggression.”

He called for calm, respectful dialogue:

“We do not need loud, forceful communication but rather communication that is capable of listening.”

He also urged global support for jailed journalists and emphasized the value of free speech and press freedom.

More Than Coincidence?

While the Pope never named Trump, the timing and tone of his speech didn’t go unnoticed.
“New Pope delivers speech that sure seems like shade at Trump,” one user tweeted.
Another chimed in: “Pope takes swipe at those who attack journalists – as Trump rages about ‘fake news.’”
A third observed, “While Trump attacks journalists daily, Pope Leo defends the press.”

A Final Blessing

After his speech, Pope Leo walked through the crowd. When asked if he had a message for the U.S., he smiled and replied, “Many. God bless you all.”

Trump has not responded directly to the Pope’s remarks. Meanwhile, the Vatican remains silent on the matter, moving forward with a vision of unity and open dialogue.
