Pope Leo XIV didn’t mince words when asked if he had a message for the United States. During his first news conference on Monday, May 12, the newly elected pontiff spoke briefly with reporters—then delivered a sharp, five-word answer that quickly sparked debate.

Calling for a Different Kind of Communication

While addressing the media, Pope Leo emphasized the Church’s need for more thoughtful discourse.

“The way we communicate is of fundamental importance,” he said.
“We must say ‘no’ to the war of words and images. We must reject the paradigm of war.”

He urged leaders and journalists to disarm their language—to remove prejudice, resentment, and aggression from communication.

“We don’t need loud, forceful speech,” he added,
“but rather communication that listens and gives voice to the voiceless.”

Many interpreted this as a subtle jab at former President Donald Trump, who is known for his outspoken posts on social media.

Trump’s Reaction — And a Curious Claim

In a recent Truth Social post, Trump suggested that his own political campaign somehow influenced Pope Leo’s election—an unusual and unverified claim.

Shortly after the news conference, a reporter asked the Pope if he had a message for the U.S. His response was short but impactful:

“Many,” he said, then added, “God bless you all.”

Will Pope Leo Challenge Trump?

Some religious scholars believe Pope Leo XIV might pose a quiet challenge to Trump’s worldview.

Professor Anna Rowlands, a UK theologian, said the Pope has a disarming presence. She described him as gentle, thoughtful, and grounded—everything Trump is not.

“He’s unlikely to be confrontational,” she told the PA news agency,
“but the content of what he says will be quite challenging.”

She added that Pope Leo aims to engage, not judge. His focus appears to be justice, human dignity, and peace—not political conflict.

“He wants a genuine dialogue with the U.S. administration—one that’s rooted in real values,” she said.
