Tim Moore, a representative from North Carolina, unveils a secret passage beneath the US Capitol – full details

Hidden Staircase Unearthed

Rep. Tim Moore from North Carolina recently revealed a hidden staircase beneath the US Capitol, sparking intense debate. While many viewers were intrigued by the rare glimpse, others raised concerns over sharing such details publicly.

The Historic Discovery

In a video shared on Moore’s X account, he unveiled a concealed staircase beneath a trapdoor in the Lincoln Room. This room, once the House’s post office during Lincoln’s presidency, holds even more historical significance today. Moore explained that the Capitol, which began construction in the 1700s, hides many passageways.

Revealing the Passage

As Moore lifted the floor panel, he revealed the hidden entrance. “You can see there’s a passageway. These were old stairs that used to be here but were closed off,” he noted. Despite the narrow opening, Moore joked, “My big self has actually gotten down and more importantly out of this hole.”

A Connection to the War of 1812

Moore shared a theory that the staircase may have been used by British soldiers during their breach of the Capitol in 1814. He pointed out that the hidden architectural features of the Capitol are some of his favorite aspects to highlight during tours.

Signatures from the Past

The hidden staircase revealed signatures left by lawmakers and others, adding another layer of intrigue to the historical space. Moore reflected on how President Lincoln sat near the fireplace in this room to read letters but suggested the most interesting part of the room was beneath the floorboards.

Public Reaction

Viewers quickly responded to Moore’s video. Many were captivated by the discovery. One person wrote, “Sounds intriguing, can’t wait to check it out!” Others expressed excitement with comments like, “I want to go exploring now!” and “That’s very cool. I’d never seen that before.”

Criticism and Clarification

Entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David questioned the wisdom of publicizing such information, concerned that “the enemy is watching everything.” In response, Moore clarified that the area shown was not a tunnel but a long-sealed exit connecting the second floor to the outside.

Sharing History

Moore expressed his enthusiasm for sharing history with his constituents, noting that the staircase had been closed off for decades. He emphasized that the information was already public and appreciated the widespread interest in the Capitol’s history.

The Capitol’s Rich History

The Capitol’s history dates back to 1793, when George Washington laid its cornerstone. Despite significant setbacks, including damage during the War of 1812, the Capitol was completed in 1826. Despite the destruction, work resumed after the war, and the Capitol was finally finished.

This brief peek into the Capitol’s hidden past sparked both concern and fascination, highlighting its rich history and enduring significance.
