Recent Research Sheds Light on the Effects of Cannabis on the Brain…Details in the first comment!!

As cannabis gains global acceptance, emerging research highlights its potential risks, particularly for young adults. A McGill University study published in JAMA Psychiatry reveals that cannabis reduces brain connectivity and synaptic density, especially in individuals at high risk of psychosis. These changes impair brain regions crucial for decision-making and emotional regulation.

Cannabis disrupts synaptic pruning, a natural developmental process, and amplifies psychosis risk during brain maturation. Another study in JAMA Network Open found long-term cannabis users show reduced activity in brain areas related to memory and focus. Over 60% of frequent users had impaired working memory, crucial for daily tasks.

Advanced imaging also shows cannabis weakens communication between key brain networks, and contrary to belief, cannabidiol (CBD) may not protect against these effects. As legalization spreads, understanding cannabis’s cognitive and psychiatric impacts is essential for informed use and early intervention.
