A doctor clarifies why you might feel the urge to poop immediately after eating

Understanding the Urge to Poop After Eating

If you often feel the need to use the bathroom right after a meal, you’re not alone. A doctor on TikTok recently explained this common experience. It’s not because the food is rushing through your system. Instead, it’s a natural bodily response called the gastrocolic reflex.

What Is the Gastrocolic Reflex?

The gastrocolic reflex stimulates movement in your lower gastrointestinal tract after eating. According to VeryWell Health, this process is completely normal and helps create space in your digestive system for more food.

The Science Behind It

When food enters the stomach, it stretches. This sends signals to the brain, which instructs the colon to contract. These contractions push out waste, creating the urge to go to the bathroom. Importantly, this waste is from previously digested food, not the recent meal.

How IBS Affects the Reflex

For people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the gastrocolic reflex can be more intense. IBS often brings symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, and gas. Dr. Salhab mentions that some people experience severe cramping and diarrhea after eating due to strong colon contractions.

Managing the Symptoms

While the gastrocolic reflex is normal, it can be more uncomfortable for some. Fortunately, there are ways to manage the symptoms and reduce discomfort.
