In spite of cautions and the host’s statement about political supervision, 60 Minutes went ahead with a shocking Trump report

60 Minutes Defies Pressure with Trump Report

60 Minutes aired a controversial episode on Donald Trump, even as CBS faces a major lawsuit from the former president.

Host Speaks Out Against Oversight

Recently, long-time host Scott Pelley publicly criticized CBS’ parent company, Paramount. He claimed they were supervising the show’s political stories because of the massive lawsuit Trump filed last year.

The Lawsuit’s Origins

In November 2024, Trump’s legal team sued CBS. The lawsuit followed 60 Minutes’ interview with Kamala Harris, then running against Trump in the election. According to CNN, Trump’s team accused the show of misleading the public and trying to sway the election in Harris’ favor.

Growing Tensions at CBS

Because of the legal battle, Paramount reportedly tightened its oversight of how 60 Minutes covers Trump. Pelley and other journalists pushed back, especially after executive producer Bill Owens resigned.

“In tonight’s Last Minute, a note on Bill Owens,” Pelley said on air. “He was our boss. Bill spent nearly 40 years at CBS News, including 26 at 60 Minutes. He covered combat, the White House, and worked to open minds, not close them.”

Pelley continued, “Paramount wants to complete a merger, but the Trump administration must approve it. So Paramount began supervising our content. None of our stories were blocked, but Bill felt he lost the independence honest journalism needs. No one here is happy about it. By resigning, Bill proved he was the right leader for 60 Minutes all along.”

Despite Supervision, Trump Report Airs

Despite the new restrictions, 60 Minutes aired a report last night (May 4) on Trump’s lawsuits against several U.S. law firms.

The episode, titled “How Law Firms Targeted by Trump Are Responding to White House Pressure,” revealed the challenges the team faced.

Securing Voices for the Story

“It was near impossible to get anyone to take part in an interview,” Pelley admitted. In the end, only one person agreed to speak: Mark Alias, an American attorney and long-time Trump opponent.

“He was the only lawyer the president named who was willing to appear on 60 Minutes,” Pelley said.
