Michelle Obama Reveals Why She Didn’t Show Up To Trump’s Inauguration

Michelle Obama Opens Up About Skipping Trump’s Inauguration

Michelle Obama is speaking out about her decision to skip President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, and she has no regrets. During a candid conversation with actress Taraji P. Henson on the IMO podcast, Michelle emphasized the importance of putting herself first, even when others don’t understand.

Prioritizing Herself

At 60, Michelle has learned to say “no” without feeling guilty. She shared that therapy has helped her feel more comfortable making decisions based on her needs. “When I decided not to attend the inauguration, people assumed the worst,” she said. “They couldn’t accept that I was doing what was best for me.”

Dealing with Criticism

Michelle’s absence from both Trump’s inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral sparked widespread speculation. Despite the noise, Michelle admitted that the decision wasn’t easy. “It took everything in me to resist doing what was expected and focus on what was necessary for me,” she confessed.

Resisting Pressure

She even planned ahead to avoid the temptation to change her mind. “I made a point not to have an outfit ready,” she explained. “If the outfit’s hanging in the closet, it’s easy to slip into the role people expect.”

Taraji P. Henson’s Support

Taraji P. Henson praised Michelle’s honesty, noting that many women act as “shock absorbers” for others. “Women are expected to carry the emotional burden for their families, communities, and public image,” Henson said. “It’s exhausting and unfair.”

Setting an Example for Her Daughters

Michelle agreed and said she is still learning to prioritize herself. She also wants to set an example for her daughters, Malia and Sasha. “If after everything I’ve achieved, I’m still trying to prove myself, what does that say to the next generation?” she reflected.

Healthy Boundaries Are Necessary

Michelle made it clear that setting boundaries isn’t selfish. “I want my daughters to start practicing saying ‘no’ earlier than I did,” she said. “The world keeps spinning even when you say no. It doesn’t fall apart when you put yourself first.”

A Powerful Message for Women

Michelle’s remarks send a strong message: Women don’t need to explain their choices to anyone. Sometimes, doing what’s best for yourself is the most powerful statement of all.
