A fan’s brief celebration at PNC Park quickly turned into panic. Reactions erupted from the field, the stands, and his hometown.
Shocking Fall at PNC Park
On Wednesday night, May 1, 2025, during a Major League Baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs, 20-year-old Kavan Markwood fell 21 feet onto the right-field warning track. The incident happened in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Immediately, play stopped. Emergency crews rushed to help.
How It Happened
Witnesses reported that Markwood, a former football athlete from McKeesport, had taken off his shirt and poured beer on himself after Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double. Suddenly, he lost his balance and toppled over a 3-foot railing in Section 142.
Stadium Response
The Pirates organization later confirmed that the 36-inch railing meets building codes. Markwood’s fall took place behind the iconic 21-foot Clemente Wall, a tribute to Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
Emergency Response
Medical teams, police, EMS, and trainers sprinted to Markwood’s side. They stabilized him on a backboard and transported him to Allegheny General Hospital. Pittsburgh Public Safety called the fall accidental. As of the latest update, Markwood remained in critical condition.
Community Rallies
Back home, Markwood’s athletic community rallied. A 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School, Markwood played linebacker at Wheeling University and briefly at Walsh University. His former coach, Zac Bruney, described him as “a very good young man” and hoped he might return to the team one day.
South Allegheny athletic director Mike Brown praised Markwood as “a standout athlete” and “a young man of character.” Former coach Frank Cortazzo called Markwood’s strength “unmatched” and urged the community to keep him in their thoughts.
Pirates Organization Speaks Out
Pirates chairman Bob Nutting addressed the tragedy in a public statement. He called the moment “heartbreaking” and thanked first responders for their swift, compassionate action. Nutting stressed the importance of unity, encouraging fans to support Markwood and his family.

NFL Injury Draws Parallels
Just months earlier, another athlete’s injury made headlines. On January 12, 2025, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs suffered a head injury during a playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
