Baggage handler shares the reason you shouldn’t put a ribbon on your bags.

The Problem with Ribbons on Luggage

If you’ve ever anxiously watched the baggage carousel, waiting for your suitcase to appear, you know how easy it is to confuse your bag with someone else’s. Many travelers tie ribbons to their luggage to make it easier to spot, but an airport worker warns this common trick could actually create problems.

Why Ribbons Are a Bad Idea

John, a Dublin Airport baggage handler, explains that using ribbons can interfere with the scanning process. He told RSVP Live, “Ribbons tied onto suitcases can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall. If it can’t be scanned automatically, it may end up in manual processing, and your bag could miss the flight.”

To avoid delays, John recommends keeping your suitcase free of ribbons and old travel stickers. “Remove old stickers too, as they can confuse the scanners,” he advises.

A Surprising Packing Mistake: Marzipan

In addition to avoiding ribbons, John has another surprising tip: never pack marzipan. He explains that the sweet almond treat has the same density as explosives, which could cause security to flag your bag for further inspection. “Your bag will be removed, and you might even be called off the plane for a search,” he warns.

Proper Luggage Handling

Before sending your suitcase down the conveyor belt, make sure to place it wheels-side up. This simple step can help prevent damage to your bag during handling.

Choose Standout Luggage

Instead of relying on ribbons, consider investing in colorful or patterned luggage. Travel & Leisure notes that while black is versatile, it’s the most common color at baggage claim. Bright, bold hues like hot pink or other distinctive patterns will make your suitcase stand out without causing issues in the baggage hall.

If you’re attached to your current suitcase, fabric paint or stickers can be an alternative way to personalize it without disrupting the scanning process.

Avoid Travel Hassles

By following John’s advice, you can reduce the risk of luggage mishaps. What other tips do you have for stress-free travel? Share your thoughts, and pass this story along to help other travelers!
