Trump Discusses His “Big Issue” for Canada
Following Canada’s recent election, Donald Trump addressed being a “big issue” for the country.
Trump’s Plan for Canada
Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly expressed his goal of making Canada the 51st state of the U.S. He also raised tariffs on several nations, including Canada, Mexico, and China. In response to the tariff war, Trump suggested that Canada could solve its problems by becoming America’s 51st state.
Canadian Reaction
Unsurprisingly, this idea didn’t sit well with Canadians. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the proposal, even before the tariff dispute escalated. He dismissed Trump’s suggestion, stating, “The 51st state, it’s not going to happen.”
Mark Carney’s Response
Newly-elected Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed Trudeau’s sentiments. He fiercely rejected Trump’s plan, saying, “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country — never. These are not idle threats; President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never happen.”
Trump’s Interview with ABC News
On the 100th day of his presidency, Trump sat down for an interview with ABC News’ Terry Moran. Moran asked Trump about his role in the Canadian election, noting the anger over his “51st state” suggestion.
Trump casually responded, “That’s their prerogative.”
Trump’s Reactions to Criticism
When Moran pointed out that Trump’s rhetoric had damaged the U.S.’s reputation, especially in tourism, Trump countered, stating, “The country’s doing great. Prices are down, gasoline’s down, energy is down, tourism will go up.”
Despite Moran’s repeated concerns about tourism’s decline, Trump remained steadfast, declaring that America was “doing very well.”
Tense Ending
The interview ended with tension, as Trump criticized ABC News, calling it “one of the worst” outlets.
