Donald Trump’s Bold Suggestion for Next Pope
Donald Trump has some ideas for the future leader of the Catholic Church. The 78-year-old U.S. President recently revealed who he thinks should replace Pope Francis.
Trump’s ‘Number One Choice’
Trump believes he knows the perfect candidate to step into Pope Francis’ shoes. Following the pope’s death on Easter Monday (April 21), Trump confidently named himself as the ideal choice. When asked who should replace the pontiff, Trump’s response was clear: “I’d like to be Pope. That’d be my number one choice.”
Pope Francis’ Legacy
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away after a cerebral stroke led to a coma and heart failure. He was celebrated as the “People’s Pope,” loved by Catholics worldwide. Sir Keir Starmer even called him a pontiff for “the poor, the downtrodden, and the forgotten.” His successor will face high expectations.
The Election Process
On May 7, over a hundred cardinals will meet in the Sistine Chapel to elect the new Pope. The election process is shrouded in secrecy. However, candidates must meet strict requirements, such as being baptized, male, unmarried, and at least 35 years old. They must also have studied theology or canon law.
Trump’s Qualifications
Although Trump identifies as a non-denominational Christian, his qualifications for the papacy are questionable. He’s not Catholic, and the head of the Catholic Church traditionally must be. Nonetheless, Trump humorously suggested himself for the role, despite lacking the necessary background.
A Potential U.S. Pope?
While Trump didn’t specify a preference, he did mention a U.S. cardinal from New York as a potential candidate. He believes a U.S. pope wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Lindsey Graham’s Support
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham expressed support for Trump’s papal bid, calling him a “dark horse candidate.” He even encouraged the papal conclave and the faithful to keep an open mind about the possibility of a Trump papacy.
Controversy at the Funeral
Trump’s attendance at Pope Francis’ funeral wasn’t without controversy. His outfit and conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sparked debates ahead of the service.
