World Leaders Honor Late Pope in Vatican City
On April 26, world leaders gathered in Vatican City to pay tribute to the late Pope, who passed away at 88 due to a stroke and heart failure. The open-air funeral at St. Peter’s Square saw an impressive turnout of around 200,000 mourners.
Notable Attendees and Controversy
Among the attendees were U.S. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the Prince of Wales. However, Trump sparked controversy by wearing a blue suit instead of the traditional black, drawing online criticism for being “disrespectful.” Critics noted the irony, especially given Trump’s previous comments about Zelenskyy’s attire.
Zelenskyy’s Informal Clothing
Zelenskyy, who has consistently refused to wear a suit since Russia’s 2022 invasion, was also noted for his casual clothing during the funeral.
Break with Tradition
After the service, in an unusual departure from tradition, the late Pope’s body was taken to the Basilica of St. Mary Major. There, the poor and needy would have the opportunity to pay their respects.
