The Prophecy Gains Attention
We’re familiar with predictions and premonitions—often met with skepticism. Yet, this particular prophecy has sparked enough online buzz to merit attention, despite being nearly a millennium old.
The Prophecy’s Unsettling Claim
The prophecy in question comes from the Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Archbishop Malachy of Armagh in the 1100s. It supposedly lists 112 popes, with only one pope remaining after Benedict XVI. If true, this would mean Pope Francis is the final pope, leading to the end of the world.
The Last Pope: A Grim Fate?
Malachy’s prophecy states that the final pope will be “Peter the Roman,” who will lead during a time of great tribulation. Once his reign ends, “the city of seven hills” will be destroyed, and judgment will fall upon the people. Pope Francis chose his name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, whose father was named Pietro (Peter), adding a tenuous link to this prediction.
The Countdown to 2027
Some interpretations suggest the prophecy predicts the world will end in 2027. With current global instability, this prediction seems eerily timely. However, not everyone believes it.
Skeptics Speak Out
Many critics dismiss Malachy’s predictions. For instance, Josh Canning, director of the Newman Centre in Toronto, stated in 2013 that it’s impossible to link Pope Francis to “Peter the Roman.”
