An Insight into Pope Francis’ Funeral Ceremony and His Last Request

Pope Francis’ Final Wishes

With Pope Francis’ passing, attention has shifted to his burial plans. Rather than being interred in the Vatican, he chose a resting place reflecting his humility and lifelong devotion.

A Life Redefined by Humility

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis redefined the role of the Catholic Church leader. Embracing humility, he prioritized the needs of the people. His decision to forgo burial in the Vatican was another example of this commitment. Despite his declining health in his final months, preparations for his passing were quietly underway.

Pope Francis Breaks Tradition

On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at Casa Santa Marta. Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the news, noting the Pope’s lifelong devotion to the Church and the needy. Pope Francis had already made clear his desire to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major, rather than the Vatican. This decision marked a significant break from tradition, as most popes are buried in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica.

A Personal Devotion

For Pope Francis, the Basilica of St. Mary Major was deeply significant. He had visited the basilica every Sunday when traveling to Rome before becoming pope. The basilica houses the revered Salus Populi Romani icon, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. This special connection to the image guided his decision to be laid to rest there.

Revised Funeral Rites

Before his death, Pope Francis made significant changes to his funeral rites, simplifying the rituals. These changes reflected his role as a bishop rather than a lofty figure. The new liturgical book, which replaced the 2000 version, was approved in April 2024.

A Shift in Burial Tradition

Six popes, including Pope Clement IX in 1669, have been buried at St. Mary Major. Pope Francis’ choice was a personal one, aligning with his emphasis on simplicity and humility. His decision also marked a break from the traditional burial place for popes.

Health Struggles and Concerns

Pope Francis faced several health challenges leading up to his death. In February 2024, he was hospitalized for bronchitis and later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. Despite these setbacks, he remained hopeful, requesting prayers for his health.

Ongoing Medical Treatment

By February 2024, Pope Francis’ condition worsened, requiring treatment for pneumonia and respiratory issues. He continued to receive medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where doctors worked to manage his symptoms. Despite these difficulties, he maintained his good spirits and continued his work.

Legacy of Humility

In the final months of his life, Pope Francis’ health struggles intensified. However, his decision to be buried outside the Vatican, at a place of personal devotion, further underscored his commitment to humility and service. He remained a leader focused on the needs of others until the very end.
