Green Day Goes Political at Coachella
Green Day made waves at Coachella by changing a key lyric in their most iconic song to take a jab at former President Donald Trump.
A Bold Move on a Big Stage
On April 12, the rock band headlined day two of the festival, performing in front of stars like Travis Scott, Charli XCX, and Sam Fender. During their performance of American Idiot, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong replaced the familiar line:
“I’m not a part of a redneck agenda”
with a more direct shot:
“I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”
Armstrong Speaks Out—Again
Billie Joe Armstrong, known for his outspoken political views, had already criticized Trump during their Australia tour. This time, he took that same energy home to California. Both he and bassist Mike Dirnt are from Rodeo, a small town near San Francisco.
Mixed Reactions Online
Fans on Twitter quickly reacted. One wrote, “Sad. I used to like them. Just tools of the libs now.” Another chimed in, “Tiresome. Why is he still in the country?”
But others loved it. “The best Coachella performance in years,” said one fan. Another added, “This is a true punk who wants peace.”
Touching on Global Issues
Green Day didn’t stop at U.S. politics. While performing Jesus of Suburbia, Armstrong changed another lyric. Originally:
“Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized…”
Now, he sang:
“Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine…”
A Pattern of Protest
This isn’t the first time Armstrong altered lyrics. Just last month, he took a shot at JD Vance after Vance criticized Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. He changed the line:
“Am I r*****ed, or am I just overjoyed?”
to:
“Am I r*****ed, or am I just JD Vance?”
A Divisive Act
Reactions were split. One tweet read: “Kudos for the anti-fascism, but not so much for the ableism.”
