Female fencer earns an award and substantial prize after choosing not to compete with a transgender opponent.

Fencer Receives Award After Refusing to Compete Against Transgender Opponent

Stephanie Turner, a member of the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia, has been awarded for her ‘bravery’ after declining to compete against a transgender athlete.

The Protest

Turner was scheduled to face 20-year-old Redmond Sullivan, a transgender athlete from the University of Maryland, at a USA Fencing tournament on March 30. However, Turner forfeited the match.

In a bold protest, she removed her mask, took a knee on the piste, and informed Sullivan that she would not compete. Turner reportedly told Sullivan, “I’m sorry, but I will not fence you. You’re a man, and I’m a woman, and this is a women’s tournament. I have much love and respect for you, but I will not fence you.”

Referee’s Penalty

For her actions, Turner received a black card from the referee. This card signifies a severe penalty, marking the “definitive and negative end of competition” for a fencer who violates the code of honor, according to the Academy of Fencing Masters.

Turner’s Reasoning

Turner explained her decision as a concern for her “own physical safety,” claiming that she feared being hurt by her opponent.

Support from XX-XY Athletics

Since the incident, Turner has found support from XX-XY Athletics, a campaign group focused on “protecting women’s sports.” The group’s mission stresses that “sex matters” and argues it’s unfair and dangerous to allow male athletes to compete in women’s events.

XX-XY Athletics awarded Turner its Courage Wins Award, along with a $5,000 prize and entry into its leadership program. Founder Jennifer Sey praised Turner, calling her “more powerful than any male” after her protest and describing her as “a real hero.”

A Broader Discussion

XX-XY Athletics also aims to provide a platform for those impacted by the controversy, offering community and support. The group previously awarded Sia Liilii for leading a University of Nevada volleyball team boycott against a transgender player from San Jose State University.

Turner’s decision has sparked ongoing debate about fairness, inclusion, and safety in sports, highlighting the challenges and perspectives surrounding transgender athletes in women’s competitions.
