Trump Confirms Musk’s Upcoming Exit from Government Role
Donald Trump has confirmed that Elon Musk will soon leave his role in the U.S. government. Although Trump praised Musk’s cost-cutting efforts, he expects him to “step back” in the coming weeks.
Previously, Musk told Fox News’ Brett Baier that he aimed to cut the U.S. government budget by $1 trillion within 130 days—finishing by the end of May.
A Temporary Role by Design
Musk serves as a “special government employee,” a position limited to 130 workdays per year. His time in Washington was always meant to be temporary. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he leads, is set to end by July 4, 2026, unless extended.
Cabinet Conversations About Musk’s Departure
According to Politico, Trump has been informing his cabinet that Musk will soon return to focus on his businesses. While Musk may continue to advise, he won’t remain a regular part of the administration.
Trump Still Open to Musk’s Involvement
Despite the planned exit, Trump hasn’t ruled out further collaboration. On March 31, he said Musk would likely want to go back to his companies but added he’d gladly keep him involved if Musk is willing.
On April 1, a White House spokesperson echoed this, saying, “This White House would love to keep Elon around. He’s been key in pushing the President’s agenda and will continue his work unless the President decides otherwise.”
Fallout from Musk’s Government Role
Musk’s close ties with the Trump administration have sparked backlash. Tesla has seen a drop in global sales, possibly tied to the controversy.
In a bold move, Trump hosted a demonstration on the White House lawn. He criticized the “radical left” and announced he was buying a Tesla—adding even more fuel to the political drama.
