David Schwimmer Avoided Friends for Years—Until One Thing Changed
He Never Watched an Episode After It Ended
David Schwimmer admitted he didn’t watch Friends for years after the show wrapped. His reason? He couldn’t stand hearing the theme song.
The beloved sitcom, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and Schwimmer himself, ended in 2004 after a decade-long run. While the show remains a classic, Schwimmer avoided rewatching it.
The Theme Song Put Him Off
Speaking on the Making A Scene podcast, Schwimmer revealed his struggle with Friends’ theme song.
“I never watched the show after we finished it,” he said. “For me, I did it, I moved on.”
Hearing I’ll Be There for You by The Rembrandts over and over became exhausting. Every talk show, every interview—it followed him everywhere. “I just didn’t have the greatest response to it for a while,” he admitted.
Fatherhood Changed His Perspective
Everything shifted when his daughter, Cleo, discovered Friends.
“When my kid was about nine, she started watching it,” Schwimmer shared. “I’d be making breakfast, and I’d hear her laughing. My whole relationship with the show and the song changed.”
Parenthood, he said, is the “greatest joy” of his life, and seeing Friends through his daughter’s eyes gave him a fresh perspective.
Friends Was a Life-Changing Experience
Schwimmer acknowledged Friends as his “big break” and a pivotal moment in his career. Before the show aired, he recalled walking through a Las Vegas casino and being told it was the last time he’d experience anonymity.
“It was an incredible, life-changing chapter,” he said, emphasizing the deep bond the cast and crew shared.
Ready to Move On
Despite the emotional farewell, Schwimmer was prepared to leave Friends behind.
“It felt like it was coming to a natural end,” he explained. “Maybe it even overstayed its welcome a bit, but we were still having so much fun.”
While the show remains timeless for fans, Schwimmer has finally found a way to appreciate it again—thanks to his daughter.
