Coach Fired After Hair-Pulling Incident
A viral incident led to the firing of Northville High School basketball coach, Jim Zullo. The altercation occurred after a loss to La Fargeville in the New York State Class D championship on March 21. Zullo was seen pulling the hair of one of his female players, Hailey Monroe, sparking widespread outrage.
The Incident
During the live-streamed event, Zullo was caught on camera pulling Monroe’s ponytail as she tearfully awaited the opposing team’s medal ceremony. Zullo then berated her, prompting teammate Ahmya Tompkins to intervene. Tompkins urged Zullo to stop, but he responded angrily, saying, “You shut it,” according to lip reader Nicola Hickling.
Lip Reader’s Account
Hickling, who analyzed the footage, confirmed that Tompkins told the coach, “Leave her. That’s not okay.” Zullo ignored the request and continued before snapping at Tompkins.

The footage quickly spread across social media, with many demanding Zullo’s resignation. Northville Central School District acted swiftly, confirming Zullo’s dismissal. They issued a statement condemning his behavior, emphasizing their commitment to respect and integrity within the community.
Zullo’s Apology
Zullo issued a public apology, acknowledging his unacceptable actions. He expressed regret and extended his apologies to Monroe, her family, the team, and the community. In his statement, he stated, “Under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry. I wish I could have those moments back.”
