A United Airlines pilot turned the plane around two hours into a 13-hour flight after realizing he had forgotten an essential item.

This wasn’t a “Home Alone” situation—no children were left behind. However, the missing item was nearly as crucial. The flight, UA 198, had departed Los Angeles for Shanghai on March 22, with 257 passengers and 13 crew members on board. Just after takeoff, the plane was redirected.

According to FlightAware, the plane made a U-turn and landed in San Francisco at 5 pm local time.
The Missing Passport
The issue? The pilot had forgotten his passport. United Airlines confirmed the oversight and offered meal vouchers to affected passengers.

Yang Shuhan, a Chinese passenger on the flight, described the pilot as frustrated when he admitted his mistake. While some passengers appreciated his honesty, others expressed frustration on social media.
Apologies and Compensation
United Airlines issued a public apology for the disruption. Customers received meal vouchers and compensation. Yang received $30 in vouchers and filed a compensation claim.
Delayed Arrival in Shanghai
A new crew was arranged, and the flight resumed, landing in Shanghai six hours later than expected. Passengers on the return flight to LA also faced delays due to the interruption.
