Trump Supports Tesla at White House Event
President Donald Trump made headlines Tuesday after expressing his backing for Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, during a White House event. A standout moment came when a photo showed Trump holding a Tesla price list while standing next to a lineup of the company’s electric cars on the South Lawn.
Eyeing a Tesla Purchase
Before the gathering, Trump announced on Truth Social that he was considering buying a Tesla to show support for Musk. While addressing reporters outside the White House, he admired a red Model S parked nearby.
“That’s a beauty,” he said, hinting that he might write a check for the car, which starts at around $80,000. He also mentioned possibly buying a Cybertruck—a futuristic Tesla pickup—for his 17-year-old granddaughter, Kai. The Cybertruck’s base price is nearly $80,000.
A Note That Caught Attention
During his speech, Trump was seen holding a handwritten note listing Tesla prices. The note read: “Teslas can be purchased as low as $299/month or $35K,” resembling a sales pitch. A White House photographer captured the note, and the image quickly spread online.
Tax Credit Uncertainty
Though electric vehicle buyers may qualify for federal tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act, it’s unclear if Trump would be eligible. U.S. law limits the tax credit to those earning under $300,000, while a sitting president makes $400,000 annually. In 2016, Trump famously pledged to accept only a $1 salary, though he hasn’t confirmed if that policy continues during his current term.
Backing Musk Amid Challenges
Trump’s support for Tesla comes as the company grapples with financial troubles and mounting criticism. Musk, now aligned with the administration’s new DOGE office, has faced backlash over his political stances. Protests against Musk have escalated in the U.S. and Europe, with some demonstrations leading to vandalism at Tesla showrooms.
Meanwhile, Tesla’s stock has dropped 55% from its December peak, closing at $230.58 on Tuesday. Concerns over slowing global sales and Musk’s political focus have fueled the downturn.
Trump Defends Musk
Despite Tesla’s struggles, Trump stood by Musk.
“I’m buying a Tesla because, number one, it’s an incredible product, absolutely top-tier, and number two,” he said, pointing at Musk, “because this man has dedicated himself to this industry, and I believe he’s been treated very unfairly by a small, vocal group of people.”
Though presidents rarely drive themselves, Trump joked that White House staff could put the Tesla to good use.
Evolving Views on Electric Vehicles
Trump’s praise for Tesla signals a shift from his past skepticism toward electric vehicles. At a National Association of Black Journalists event last summer, he voiced doubts about widespread EV adoption, saying he was “against everybody having an electric car.”
With Musk’s growing influence and Tesla’s impact on the U.S. economy, Trump’s position appears to be evolving. Whether his endorsement will lead to policy changes remains to be seen.
