Stranded astronauts to be paid a shocking amount after 8-day mission turns into months

Astronauts’ Unexpected Extended Stay in Space

When astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore embarked on their mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2024, they likely anticipated an eight-day stay. However, technical issues with their Boeing capsule, including a helium leak, led to an extended stay.

The Delays

Due to these technical complications, their return to Earth has been delayed multiple times. NASA now expects them to return home sometime in March. Williams and Wilmore will be transported back via the Crew-10 mission.

Trump’s Comments

Former President Donald Trump criticized the Biden administration for “abandoning” the astronauts, urging Elon Musk and SpaceX to rescue them. He tweeted, “Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck, Elon!!!”

Elon Musk’s Response

Elon Musk quickly responded on X, confirming that he would take action to bring the astronauts home.

Are They Really Stranded?

Despite media reports calling them “stranded,” astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell clarifies that they are not. “It’s way overblown,” he stated. “They’re fine. They just got to do an extra spacewalk, which they love. They’ll come home on the next ride.”

NASA’s Assurance

NASA reassures the public that Williams and Wilmore are in good spirits. Their basic needs, including food and clothing, are well taken care of. Williams commented, “It’s just been a joy to be working up here. It doesn’t feel like we’re cast away.”

Ongoing Work in Space

The astronauts continue to conduct experiments, spacewalks, and other routine operations during their stay. Despite their unexpected extended mission, they remain focused on their tasks.

Pay for Prolonged Stay

The media has questioned how much the astronauts will be paid for their extended time in space. According to retired NASA astronaut Cady Coleman, astronauts are compensated like federal employees on a business trip. “There is some small amount of money per day for incidentals,” she explained, revealing that she was paid around $4 (£3.19) per day.

For Williams and Wilmore, this means an additional $1,004 (£801.27) for their extended stay.
