Boy hugs mom’s coffin after she dies birthing his brother

Death is an inevitable part of life, yet many believe that young children should be shielded from such painful realities. There’s a fear that discussing it might confuse or distress their innocent minds.

However, life sometimes forces children to confront loss sooner than expected.

That was the case for 5-year-old Khayne Kheian Naelgas Castro from the Philippines, who lost his mother during the birth of his baby brother.

Too young to understand the permanence of death, Khayne believed his mother was simply sleeping. What followed was a heartbreaking moment—he curled up beside her coffin and drifted off to sleep, waiting for her to wake up.

A Child’s Innocent Grief
According to reports from the foreign media outlet Tribun Pekanbaru, Khayne’s mother tragically passed away due to complications while giving birth to his younger brother, Cyril Khayzer Castro. Her sudden passing left the family grieving, now responsible for raising two little boys without their mother.

But for young Khayne, the reality of death hadn’t fully sunk in. He spent hours sitting quietly by his mother’s coffin, gazing down at her still face, expecting her to stir. Sometimes, he would rest his head against the coffin, as if patiently waiting for her to wake up.

His grandmother, who witnessed these heartbreaking moments, shared his sorrow through a Facebook post.

“Why Can’t Mommy Sleep with Me Anymore?”
“This child asked me, ‘Why can’t mommy sleep with me anymore?’” she wrote, her words filled with pain.

She struggled to find a way to explain death to a child so young. All she could do was watch as Khayne carried a small stool to the coffin, climbing up to look at his mother’s face, hoping she would open her eyes. He tried to hug her, unaware that she would never wake up again.

The images she shared captured the depth of his sorrow. In one particularly touching moment, Khayne, exhausted from grief, leaned against a chair beside the coffin. In another, he pushed several chairs together, creating a makeshift bed so he could sleep beside her—perhaps hoping to see her in his dreams.

An Outpouring of Sympathy
The photos quickly spread across social media, touching hearts around the world. Strangers flooded the comments with words of support and encouragement, deeply moved by the little boy’s heartbreaking devotion to his mother.

Many expressed their sympathy, while others even offered financial assistance to help the family during this difficult time.

Overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers, the grandmother responded with gratitude.

“May God bless everyone,” she wrote. “Please continue to pray for Cyril, who was just born. We hope he grows up strong and healthy.”

Finding Strength in Loss
Though Khayne’s story is one of immense sorrow, it also highlights the importance of supporting grieving families—especially young children who may not yet understand the concept of loss.

Thanks to the compassion of others, Khayne and his family are receiving the help they need to navigate this heartbreaking chapter of their lives. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
