Full Metal Jacket actor, passes away at 69.

Kevyn Major Howard, Full Metal Jacket Star, Dies at 69

A Lasting Legacy in Hollywood
Kevyn Major Howard, best known as Rafterman in the iconic war film Full Metal Jacket, has died at 69. His unforgettable performance as the eager yet disillusioned combat photographer left a lasting impact on audiences.

Why Full Metal Jacket Stands Out
In my opinion, Full Metal Jacket is one of the greatest war films ever made. Unlike typical U.S. propaganda films, it doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of both the military and the Vietnam War. Instead, it offers an unfiltered look at war’s dehumanizing nature, making it even more powerful.

Breakthrough Role in Full Metal Jacket
Released in 1987, the film follows a group of Marines from their intense boot camp training to the front lines of battle. Howard’s portrayal of Rafterman, who follows Matthew Modine’s character, Joker, to document the war, remains a standout moment.

For Howard, the experience left a deep mark on his career. He once described director Stanley Kubrick as an all-knowing father figure, even comparing him to the Dalai Lama.

Life After Full Metal Jacket
Following his memorable role, Howard made a brief return to television, appearing in a 1988 episode of Miami Vice. He also starred in Sudden Impact alongside Clint Eastwood and Death Wish II with Charles Bronson. However, by 1999, he chose to retire from acting, making his final appearance in Crusade.

A New Passion: Photography
After leaving Hollywood, Howard found success as a headshot photographer. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the best, earning the title “King of the Hollywood Headshot” on the BBC show The Human Face. His transition from acting to photography solidified his legacy in a completely different field.

Beyond photography, Howard also dedicated himself to charity work. He founded a nonprofit supporting veterans, first responders, and their families.

Honoring Military Sacrifices
Although Howard never served in the military, he deeply respected those who did.

“I have a much clearer understanding of patriotism and the courage it takes to serve,” he once said.

Many Marines have watched Full Metal Jacket, and Howard believed the film helped them confront their sacrifices. He felt honored to stand beside them in silent tribute to their fallen comrades.

Cause of Death
Howard’s family told TMZ he passed away in a Las Vegas hospital on Friday, February 14, surrounded by loved ones. He had been hospitalized for weeks due to respiratory issues, though his official cause of death has not been confirmed.

Remembering Kevyn Major Howard
Howard’s family described him as a loving man whose legacy goes beyond film. His advocacy for fallen heroes and continued support for the military, law enforcement, and 9/11 victims will live on through his foundation, Fueled By The Fallen.

He is survived by his wife Tiffanie, stepdaughter Kayla, and siblings Kim and Kelsey.

Rest in Peace, Kevyn Major Howard. ❤️
