Woman who refused to swap seats with crying toddler sues airline and passenger who filmed her

The viral incident unfolded on a GOL Airlines flight from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Belo Horizonte on December 4. Jeniffer Castro – a bank worker in Brazil – refused to give up her window seat to a young boy.

The child reportedly already had a window seat in a different row but threw a tantrum, insisting on sitting in Castro’s assigned seat, News.com.au reports. The 29-year-old stood her ground, declining to swap places with him. That decision didn’t sit well with the irate mother of the child, who decided to film the exchange while berating Castro.

In the clip, the woman behind the camera can be heard asking: “Why doesn’t she want to change seats? I even asked if she has some kind of syndrome or something. If someone has a problem, some disability, we understand.”

“I’m recording your face, this is disgusting. It’s the 21st century and people have no empathy for children,” she added, translated from Portuguese to English (per The Sun).

Despite the passenger’s insults, Castro remained calm, only asking if she was being recorded. The footage quickly went viral on TikTok. Instead of condemning Castro, online users rallied to her defense.

Many praised her calm demeanor and supported her decision not to give in to pressure. “I admire her patience, lol,” one user wrote on TikTok, while another applauded her for keeping herself composed like a “diva”.

A third said: “I’m with you Jennifer Castro, the mother has to educate her children,” and a fourth added: ” I’m a mother and I would never do something like that… I wish I had that inner peace like Jenifer.”

Castro addressed the ordeal during a recent appearance on the Cola Mais Podcast. She revealed plans to take legal action against the airline and the passenger who filmed her.

“Measures are now being taken,” she said, per New York Post. “What I went through wasn’t easy. The flight attendants could have asked me if I need anything, or if I was bothered by the passenger, but they didn’t. They stayed out of it.”

She recounted the tense flight, explaining that when she got on the plane, the child was in her seat. “I said, ‘This is my seat,’ and waited for him to leave,” she shared.

“A guy across the aisle said, ‘Change with him, you sit next to the aisle and he’ll have your place.’ I said, ‘No.’ The boy cried the entire flight, it was around 50 minutes. The mother was very rude,” she added.

Despite the backlash she’s faced from some corners of the internet, the woman says she’s grateful for the support. “I’m happy about all the support I received, although there were some online haters too. I still don’t know how to feel about it — I’m still trying to process everything.
