Collins had previously been released due to lack of evidence, but Robbie’s confession from his hospital bed was pivotal in securing a conviction. In 2015, Collins, now 29, was sentenced to 40 years in prison. The motive for the crime was later revealed to be sexual assault by Collins. Robbie’s family was awarded $150 billion in damages, the highest in U.S. history. Robbie’s memory lives on with Robbie Middleton Day, celebrated annually on his birthday. His story continues to inspire and raise awareness for burn victims.
