SEVEN THINGS THAT CLOG YOUR PORES AND CAUSE ACNE

Understanding Pores and Their Challenges

We all have tiny openings in our skin, known as pores, which release sweat and oil. However, for some, clogged pores are more frequent. According to board-certified dermatologist Geeta Yadav, MD, clogged pores occur when oil can’t flow properly through them. “This is often due to excess oil production, which gets trapped by dead skin cells that haven’t shed correctly,” Yadav explains. Dirt, makeup, and comedogenic ingredients can also block the pores, further hindering oil flow.

What Are Comedogenic Ingredients?

Comedogenic ingredients, essentially pore-clogging substances, aren’t the sole cause of acne, but they certainly contribute. “These ingredients increase the likelihood of pimples forming,” says board-certified dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD. “For those with oily skin or acne-causing bacteria, using them is like adding fuel to the fire. It can worsen breakouts significantly.”

Why Do Ingredients Clog Pores?

We don’t fully understand what makes an ingredient comedogenic. “Comedogenicity isn’t entirely clear,” Yadav notes. In some cases, ingredients interact poorly with sebum, thickening it. Others are too thick for sebum to pass through. Occlusive ingredients, as board-certified dermatologist Melanie Palm, MD, explains, form a seal on the skin, trapping oil—especially problematic for oily skin types.

Ingredients to Avoid

Now that we know how comedogenic ingredients can trigger breakouts, it’s important to know which ones to avoid. Below are seven key ingredients that dermatologists recommend steering clear of if you’re prone to acne.

By understanding what leads to clogged pores, you can make better choices for your skin and reduce breakouts effectively.
