The Problem of Bullying in Modern Society
Bullying is a despicable issue in today’s world. We can all agree that prejudice based on something as trivial as appearance is truly abhorrent. Sadly, social media has become a platform for this toxic behavior, where people often hide behind anonymity to belittle others.
Melissa Blake’s Story
Melissa Blake, a writer, knows this pain all too well. In 2019, after writing an article for CNN, online trolls targeted her appearance. A YouTuber shared a photo of her, prompting hundreds of hurtful comments. Melissa, who has Freeman Sheldon syndrome, was cruelly labeled a “blob fish” and a “whale.”
A Courageous Stand
Instead of succumbing to the negativity, Melissa chose to take a stand in a powerful way. She posted a tweet that read: “During the last round of trollgate, people said I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I’m too ugly. So I’d just like to commemorate the occasion with these 3 selfies …” This tweet quickly gained traction as people came to her defense.
Selfies for Empowerment
But Melissa didn’t stop there. She posted a selfie every single day for an entire year. As a result, her Instagram following skyrocketed from 7,500 to 100,000. Alongside her selfies, she also addressed important topics like disabilities. She explained, “Each selfie reflected my personality and who I was. Each was a celebration, and each carried a message.”
Challenging Misconceptions
Melissa further explained her goal: “It’s a way of taking back my power and painting a more accurate picture of disability. The current image of disabled people is full of misconceptions. We lead full lives, and I’m proud to show that for an entire year.”
A Source of Inspiration
I’m deeply proud of Melissa for rising above the cruel trolls. Her bravery has inspired thousands of comments from strangers offering their support. Melissa, if you ever read this, thank you. You’ve shown us that beauty is more than skin deep. Thank you for being unapologetically you.
