College Sweethearts Luke Reimer and Mary Mich Die in Tragic Accident on Campus
A loving young couple’s life ended in heartbreak just months after celebrating their first anniversary. Luke Reimer and Mary Mich, both 20, were found dead inside a vehicle on campus at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Discovery on Campus
The students were discovered on Monday, January 19, 2025, in the rear parking lot of St. Agnes Residence Hall. Authorities responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. following a welfare check request. When officers arrived at 1505 University Blvd., both students had already passed away.
The Steubenville Police Department confirmed there were no signs of foul play or drug use.
Cause of Death
Toxicology results from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office revealed that both Luke and Mary died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators ruled the deaths accidental, likely caused by a vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction.
In a letter to the campus, Franciscan University President Father Dave Pivonka said:
“Luke and Mary were found inside a motor vehicle shortly after noon. Early indicators suggest this was a tragic accident related to a potential vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction. Our hearts ache for their families, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved them.”
Campus Response
The university canceled all scheduled events that evening. Instead, a Holy Hour and Rosary was held at 7 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel to honor Luke and Mary. Support services were offered in residence halls and at the J.C. Williams Center for grieving students.
A Public Celebration of Love
Just months before the tragedy, the couple celebrated their first anniversary. On November 1, 2025, Luke posted a series of Instagram photos, captioned:
“One year with the most beautiful woman! I love you ❤️.”
The two were frequently seen together on campus. Luke was an active member of the university lacrosse team, often sharing moments with teammates, friends, and Mary.
Grief and Tributes
On January 20, the university posted a public tribute:
“Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. Luke and Mary passed away on January 19, in what early indicators suggest was a tragic accident related to a potential vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction.”
Luke’s father shared a raw message online:
“I miss my son more than I could ever say. I am so proud of him. Why would God allow this? He was so happy and had so much to accomplish. My world has collapsed.”
Support for Students
Father Pivonka encouraged students to lean on each other and seek help. Counselors, friars, faculty, and staff were available for those struggling. Parents were advised to contact Kim King, Vice President of Student Life, with any concerns.
Ongoing Investigation
As of January 22, 2026, the Steubenville Police Department has not released further updates. The incident remains classified as non-suspicious.
