The Little-Known Story of Barack Obama’s College Love—and the Woman He Proposed to Twice Before Michelle

Barack Obama’s First Love: The Woman He Proposed to Twice

Before Barack Obama became a global icon and U.S. president, he shared a deep, formative relationship with a woman who never became his wife. A biography reveals the little-known story of the woman he asked to marry him—not once, but twice.

Love Before Michelle

While many see Barack and Michelle Obama as the ultimate love story, romance didn’t initially go his way. Before proposing to Michelle, Barack was involved with another woman: Sheila Miyoshi Jager.

According to David J. Garrow’s biography Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Obama met Jager in his early 20s while living in Chicago. Jager, of Dutch and Japanese descent, studied anthropology, like Obama’s mother. The couple seemed compatible, yet their relationship often felt isolating.

“Sheila described our time together as ‘an island unto ourselves,’” Garrow notes. Barack, then a community organizer and aspiring writer, was already ambitious. Jager recognized “a deep-seated need to be loved and admired” in him.

The First Proposal

Their relationship lasted until marriage talks began. In the winter of 1986, while visiting Jager’s parents, Barack proposed. Her parents were concerned about his career prospects and felt Sheila was too young. Jager declined but continued dating him.

By 1987, Barack’s ambitions intensified. Jager recalled, “About a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president.” She was one of the few confidants of his political dreams.

The Second Proposal and the Breakup

When Barack prepared to leave Chicago for Harvard Law School, the relationship was already strained. He proposed again, even knowing Sheila would soon leave for a research trip to Seoul. Jager later explained, the second proposal arose “out of a sense of desperation over our eventual parting and not in any real faith in our future.” They parted ways.

After the breakup, Jager earned her PhD in anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1994. She became a professor of East Asian Studies at Oberlin College and authored and edited four books on Korea and East Asia. She later married historian Jiyul Kim and currently serves as Chair of East Asian Studies and Chair of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Though she keeps a private Instagram, she shares her roles as mother, author, and scholar.

A Glimpse Into Obama’s Early Years

Garrow’s biography also explores the beginning of Obama’s relationship with Michelle during 1990–1991. Despite dating Michelle, he occasionally stayed in touch with Jager, later limiting contact to letters as his family life and political career took shape.

Though their paths diverged, Jager played a key role in shaping Barack Obama’s early life. Her story offers a rare window into the personal journey behind the public figure.
